Find Your Space

Luke 10:41-42

“Just stay still.” Those were the words I heard as I read this morning’s message from a beloved co-encourager: “I shall watch him work!” I have a home office, a room where God and I meet to talk, to read his Word, and to write messages for encouragement. It is my go-to room every morning but I have allowed it to become cluttered. When I added daily blogging to my schedule and also began to get serious about promoting my Avon website, I found myself on the internet all day. I moved my laptop and various notepads to the kitchen table… I didn’t want to be separated from my family that much. But the clutter grew with the help of others. Crumbs and sticky messes appeared and spilled drinks saturated my note pads. I was being constantly drawn to the computer physically while my mind was busy thinking like Martha: “There’s so much work to be done!” Family activity seems to revolve around the kitchen. The constant swirl of air filled with noise found its way inside my mind chasing out any real concentration that was hanging on.

After two months it became obvious, my hubby knew it and I knew it: I had to move back to my office. I cleaned well enough to get back to my secondary desk where my laptop would live once again. There’s something special about this room. When I sit here I feel closer to the Lover of my soul. This is our space, and while I know he is with me everywhere, the kitchen is too full of commotion to stay focused. It’s the same struggle inside of me. The Spirit is waiting in the living room of my soul while I continue to muddle through the mess of the kitchen.

Take a few moments to think about the condition of the room you are meeting the Lord in. “Marta [Martha], Marta, you are fretting and worrying about many things! But there is only one thing that is essential. Miryam [Mary] has chosen the right thing, and it won’t be taken away from her.” Take time today to be a Mary. Just stay still and watch him work!
