The Power Of The Meme

When I was invited to become a weekly contributor on someone else’s page I was asked by the moderator to include a meme with each post. I asked, “What is a meme?” It sounded foreign to me. I would have understood the word “image” but meme comes from a language that is ever-changing in the world that comes after the dot; .com, .net, .edu, .org, .anythingyoucanthinkof. I learned to embrace the meme, sometimes working on it for half an hour before being satisfied. I am still learning. One of the things I am noticing is what gets people’s attention.

The meme is usually the first and sometimes the only thing they see. If it doesn’t grab their attention they will just scroll on. Once in a while, an especially beautiful or goofy picture will jump out at people but what has been the most consistent is when I use the Word of God. As I pondered the observation I discovered one truth that stood out. God’s language doesn’t change. His words mean the same thing today as when he first spoke them. Perhaps our definitions have changed but God’s meanings have not, and there is something supernatural about his Word. “See, the Word of God is alive! It is at work and is sharper than any double-edged sword.” (Hebrews 4:12)

It grabs people’s attention, but they may never read beyond the meme. If you have read this far you are probably serious about a relationship with God. For many, the little tidbit in the meme is all they can handle–it is too sharp. “It is quick to judge the inner reflections and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12) What do the inner reflections of your heart show? It depends on your cleaning agent. Windex could never cut through the ugly of my heart and I could never scrub hard enough. I needed Yeshua, Jesus. Jesus allowed his body to become the rag and his blood the cleanser. “In union with him, through the shedding of his blood, we are set free–our souls are forgiven.” (Ephesians 1:7)

If all a person does is read the meme a seed has been planted. “My word that goes out from my mouth–it will not return to me unfulfilled; but it will accomplish what I intend, and cause to succeed what I sent it to do.” (Isaiah 55:11)  No wonder the best meme’s quote the Triune God.
