Come and Listen

A reminder of the power of prayer:

“Come and listen, all you who fear God, and I will tell you what he has done for me. I cried out to him with my mouth, his praise was on my tongue. Had I cherished evil thoughts, Adonai [the Lord], would not have listened.” (Psalm 66:16-18)

During a long stay at the hospital for my husband, I encountered a lady at the cafeteria whom I had spent some time with in a waiting room a couple of days earlier. Her son’s heart rate had climbed critically high and no one was able to bring it down. I asked her if we could pray and that’s just what the four of us did in that cafeteria. We parted ways with two of them leaving and two of us sitting down to eat.

“But in fact, God did listen; he paid attention to my prayer.” (Psalm 66:19)  Less than ten minutes later the lady and her husband came rushing into the cafeteria saying, “Thank God you are still here! We have to praise God for what he has done!“ When they had returned to their son’s room, the doctors and nurses were standing in confusion because the young man’s heart rate had suddenly dropped to 110. They had no idea why or how; nothing had changed.

But something had changed and his parents knew what it was. “Blessed be God, who did not reject my prayer or turn his grace away from me.” (Psalm 66:20) We praised God with excited tears of amazing joy for what he had done.

We don’t always get an immediate answer but whenever you realize that he has paid attention to your prayer, praise him as you tell others what he has done for you. Miracles are not just Bible stories, your life is sprinkled with them, whether you see them or not.
