Do you consider yourself to have a good memory? Do you think the ability to remember has changed over history? God is constantly reminding us to remember and if you read just a few pages anywhere in the Bible you’ll see why. Some of the things our ancestors forgot were just unbelievable.
John chapter 6 is a great example of this. A large crowd of 5,000 men sat on the grassy hills near the Sea of Galilee. They had to be absolutely awestruck when they watched Jesus bless the five barley loaves and two fish that turned into baskets of leftovers. When they couldn’t find him the next day, they got into their boats and traveled the five and a half mile journey to Capernaum, searching for him. When they found him they said, “What should we do in order to perform the works of God?” Jesus answered, “Here’s what the work of God is: to trust in the one he sent!”
There were less than twenty-four hours between the time they ate and the time they arrived on the other shore. Now, I forget easily and quickly–to my shame. It still seems impossible to me but, they answered Jesus by asking him, “So what miraculous sign will you do for us, so that we may see it and trust you? What work will you perform?” Seriously?! Five thousand men, in less than twenty-four hours, forgot the work he performed for them to see? If Jesus thought like I do that probably would have been the place he threw his arms in the air in disbelief and walked away.
But, because Jesus was fully man and fully God, his response was, “I am the living bread that has come down from heaven; if anyone eats this bread, he will live forever. Furthermore, the bread that I will give is my own flesh; and I will give it for the life of the world.” He loved a world that didn’t love him back and took all of our sins as his own, paying a price we could never pay–for our lives. He loves you that much! How good is your memory? Are you still looking for a miraculous sign before you truly let your guard down in his presence?
I have seen Miracles in my life.
