“Let us not grow weary of doing what is good.” (Galatians 6:9) Are you so worn out from trying to survive that you have no time or energy left in your day to worry about anyone else? I’ve known many people–myself included– who get so focused on making a living that they miss their chance to truly be alive. I was one of those people who always moved up the ladder quickly wherever I worked. It seemed like a good thing. I received honors, awards, respect…but not inner peace.
There was never enough money–the more we had, the more we needed, to feel successful. Higher positions meant more responsibility, more hours, more stress, less family time, no time to get together with friends or extended family. We struggled during holidays to get the entire family together, even for a picture. I was putting my focus on things of this world. “Those who keep sowing in the field of their old nature, in order to meet its demands, will eventually reap ruin.” (Galatians 6:8) I sure did, in the eyes of this world.
It was through financial ruin that God showed me a glimpse of how He loves me. As my hands were emptied my heart was filled. Income is good and necessary to provide food, clothing, and a home, but what kind of seed are you sowing? The seed that says, “Follow me on the road to riches,” or, “Follow Christ on the road to redemption”?
“Don’t delude yourselves: no one makes a fool of God! A person reaps what he sows.” (Galatians 6:7) It is possible to reach the top of the corporate ladder and also sow seeds for the Lord if your heart is guided by the Spirit. “Those who keep sowing in the field of the Spirit will reap from the Spirit everlasting life.” (Galatians 6:8) Is your life too full to “bear one another’s burdens?” (Galatians 6:2) As it draws to a close many people are reviewing the year and thinking of changes they would like to make in their lives. If you are one of them, give your own burdens to the Lord and let Him empty your hands so that you are free to walk with Him in peace, wherever He leads you.
