Get Up!

Throughout the Bible we see crowds of people coming to Jesus, following, calling out, reaching out to touch Him: searching for something, looking for a miracle. And what happens? Jesus responds to them with compassion.

He tells us to ask if we wish to receive, make our requests known to HIm. But what about the times you are so broken you don’t even think to ask? When you feel so lost and surrounded by your grief His name seems distant? When Jesus approached the town gate of Nain, he walked into the middle of a funeral procession. He observed the widowed mother as she walked beside the casket carrying her only child. She was broken, distraught, alone in her heart. She never even noticed Jesus, she didn’t ask Him to save or raise her son. “When the Lord saw her, he felt compassion for her and said to her, ‘Don’t cry.’ Then he came close and touched the coffin and the pallbearers halted. He said, ‘Young man, I say to you: get up!’ The dead man sat up and began to speak, and Yeshua [Jesus] gave him to his mother.” (Luke 7:11-13)

The young man’s mother did not seek Jesus at that moment but He sought her. He gave her an unexpected miracle, and in doing so opened the eyes of the townspeople: “A great prophet has appeared among us.” “God has come to help his people.” (Luke 7:16) If our Lord is so loving and compassionate when we are buried in grief so deeply we can’t see Him, how much more can we look forward to when we do come, follow and ask Him? He loves us beyond our understanding with never-ending compassion.

Are you or someone you love buried in grief, unable to be comforted by other people? The great prophet that appeared in Nain, Jesus, was later crucified, buried, rose again and ascended back to Father. But his Spirit returned to live in the heart of every believer. You are not and will not ever be alone again because: “God has come to help his people.”
