Greed Can Kill You

Do you trust the Lord to guide you safely and provide all you need for your journey? The Israelites did not. They continually looked back, longing for what they had left in Egypt; the land that was so horribly abusive to them. No matter how many miracles they witnessed they thought God would fail to take care of them, They did not trust Him.

He gave them fresh manna every day but that wasn’t good enough. They complained loudly that there was no meat to eat and they should never have left Egypt, where they had the good life. Father responded by saying: “All right, ADONAI is going to give you meat, and you will eat it. You won’t eat it just one day, or two days, or five, or ten, or twenty days, but for a whole month!–until it comes out your nose and you hate it!” (Numbers 11:18-20)

Even Moses had trouble believing that God could provide that much meat for two million people. It’s our nature to reason in our own mind instead of believing our Creator. So, “ADONAI sent out a wind which brought qualis from across the sea and let them fall near the camp, about a days trip away on each side of the camp and all around it, covering the ground to a depth of three feet.” (Numbers 11:31)

The people became so greedy they spent two days and a night, not even stopping to sleep, gathering quail. God had promised to provide for an entire month but they did not trust Him. The man with the smallest pile had gathered 500 gallons. “But while the meat was still in their mouth, before they had chewed it up, the anger of ADONAI flared up against the people.” (Numbers 11:33) He struck them with a terrible plague and many of them died.

We don’t stop Father from fulfilling His word just because we fail to believe Him. His works are not dependent on our trust. He is not a man who should lie. He will do what He says He will do. However, our failure to trust in His continued provision may cause us to become greedy and that may lead to our death. “Trust in ADONAI with all your heart; do not rely on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)
