I Got This

Do you play with fire on a regular basis? Do you jump in unprotected and unprepared? That’s a good way to get burned. I should know, I play with fire every day at this time of the year, literally. It is my job, during my awake hours, to keep the home fire burning. That requires the constant reloading of wood on top of burning coals–at least I hope they are still burning. On my mantle sits a fresh jar of burn cream prescribed by my doctor after I told him that I live by fire. He got my point and didn’t ask any questions.

Something interesting has happened this winter while tending the fire. One day as I hurriedly tossed a piece of wood to the back, it came rolling back out and didn’t come alone. As I began to get frustrated I heard the question that was becoming so familiar from the voice I know as the Rauch HaKodesh or Holy Spirit. “Did you ask me to join you?” He knew full well that I had not but being the gentle-man He is, He doesn’t just assume I want His help. He waits for me to invite him into my chaotic walk. He sees what’s coming and wants to help but He lets me go it alone. When He sees He isn’t on my mind, He’s kind enough to remind me He’s there, at which point I usually stop, breathe, visualize Him, and let Him lead. Then I am able to intentionally pick my piece of wood, and place it carefully, without fear, where He leads. No burn cream needed–this time.

But how many steps do I take before I think of or speak with Him again? Far too many.

I am one of those thick-necked children that sometimes needs a smack on the head. Jesus is very plain when He says: “And remember! I will be with you always, yes, even until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) My remeberer doesn’t do its job very well. I forget to remember but one thing is certain; if you look around and don’t see Jesus, it was you who ran off without Him.

Do you hear the question also? Is it all too familiar in your own heart? “Did you invite me to join you?” If not yet why not now?
