Self-Help

Do you ever feel like you will crumble under the weight you carry on your shoulders? How do you choose to deal with it? The world offers many ways: counselors, exercise, yoga, drugs, alcohol to name a few. Years ago I managed a bookstore. I would sometimes notice that the same people seemed to always be in the self-help aisle trying to find the perfect book to tell them how to fix themselves. The self-help section was much more popular than the Bible section, one of the smallest areas of the store.

People seem to want to be able to fix themselves. We don’t want to be dependent on anyone. We like to be able to say, “I did it all by myself.” But there is an easier, more thorough, and lasting way to unburden yourself. “If I raise my eyes to the hills, from where will my help come? My help comes from ADONAI [the Lord], the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip– your guardian is not asleep. No, the guardian of Isra’el never slumbers or sleeps.” (Psalm 121:1-3)

Do you sometimes feel like you are being chased by things that just want to pull you down, make you fall? You are if you are seeking God’s heart. Satan is the one pulling– it’s the battle for your soul. But when you are looking for help in the right place you can rest easier. “ADONAI will guard you against harm; he will guard your life. ADONAI will guard your coming and going from now on and forever,” (Psalm 121:7-8)  If you truly want to help yourself, lock arms with Jesus. Where do you need help today?
