Someone’s Watching

When you see a police officer does it make you feel safe and secure or do you quickly do a self-assessment to decide if the officer has any reason to be watching you? I suggest that it depends on your circumstances at the time. It concerns me that so many children have a deep-rooted fear when they see the uniform or even just an empty police car–because they have been influenced by someone who fears the consequences of their own actions.

Funny thing though–the fear of discovery is usually strongest when we know a person with authority is nearby. If you are driving and see a police car do you automatically check your speed? How common is it to see brake lights ahead of you and then notice the police car that initiated the brake check–even if no one was speeding. It’s an auto-reflex if you tend to have a heavy foot on the gas pedal.

I consider myself to be about 98% honest and believe that anyone who says they are 100% is a liar. I tend to be one of those people who’s foot is heavy and I am thankful for the invention of speed control. God is working in me to set that control at the speed limit and not five mph over. Many years ago, when CB radios were popular, I gave a “smokey (police) report” over the radio. The next thing that came over was the officer saying, “Smokey eat blue mustang for breakfast.” The feeling of dread from being discovered has stuck with me for over forty years. Why don’t I feel that dread knowing that God sees what I’m doing? “For ADONAI (the Lord) is watching a man’s ways; he surveys all his paths.” (Proverbs 5:21) Does that reality make you feel safe and secure? Does it cause you to live as if someone with the authority to change your future is watching every step?

“Hold fast to discipline, don’t let it go; guard it, for it is your life.” (Proverbs 4:13) You are safe and secure under the watchful eye of Father if you walk with him today.
