Wash And Dry

“They were at supper, and the Adversary had already put the desire to betray him into the heart of Y’hudah Ben-Shim’on (Judas) from K’riot.” ) Jesus knew what was about to happen. He also knew he would soon be returning to the Father, who had already given all authority to His Son. It was His choice to deal with Judas as He pleased. What pleased Him was to lower Himself to the position of a servant and wash the man’s feet right along with everyone else’s. I don’t know how I would react if I had knowledge that a trusted friend was sending me to my death for a handful of silver but I can assure you that showing an outward sign of humility would not be at the top of my list. That is one reason Jesus chose to be our example of a Christ-like life.

“Now if I, the Lord and Rabbi, have washed your feet, you also should wash each other’s feet. For I have set you an example, so that you may do as I have done to you.” (John 13:14) Do we have genuine love for God’s people? Are we willing to take on the servant position for others or do we prefer to be served?  If you are involved in a group project do you seek the position of decision-maker or clean-up crew? Jesus chose the clean-up position that night and for eternity. He accepted the calling to stand in our place–the ultimate act of love. But He wanted us to take notice and follow His example.

“I am giving you a new command; that you keep on loving each other. In the same way that I have loved you, you are also to keep on loving each other.” (John 13:34-35) But what about the Judas’ of this world? Our first reaction is usually to treat them in the manner they deserve, in our opinion. But if we are following Jesus’ example, people will know we belong to Him by the way we love. Jesus told us “Don’t let yourselves be disturbed. Trust in God and trust in me.” (John 14:1)

Today is a good day to remember the way Jesus lowered Himself to a servant’s position to teach us what it means to be humble. Be encouraged to lower yourself today when you have the chance to lift someone else.
